Why is the Gopher Tortoise important? One reason why the Gopher Tortoise is so important is because it is one of the most oldest living species. It also is very unique in which it can make very large burrows unlike most species of tortoises, which hide in very shallow waters or in vegetation. Also because the burrows, which are dug by the tortoises, provide homes for other animals. Their burrows are home to about 250 other species and some species will actually share the burrow with the tortoise.
